We have begun an 'ABC'
list of things that have helped us in the past. They are hints that
will allow you to keep your garments looking better longer. We would love
to have your input. If you know of a remedy to accomplish a cleaning chore
or an idea that will keep us from throwing out that dress or shirt that we
love, let us know. Send email to

about your solution and after we test the idea, we will publish it on the
web site, providing it works. And yes, you (the sender) will be listed as

Alterations,
are not always recommended. Some materials, (i.e., velvet, silk,
satin and corduroy) will show old needle holes. |

Be careful
with suntan oils, many of them will permanently stain a garment.

Cosmetic stains
require special treatment, as the color in cosmetics runs easily
and enlarges the stain.

Do’s & Don’ts
of acetone in home stain removal. Acetate fibers will dissolve in
acetone – Let the pro’s with the proper chemicals treat your
stain. |

Fabrics that need help
removing water spots (such as silk or a silk blend) can be removed
by holding the fabric over steam (as from a kettle), and then
ironing gently while damp. Do not rub the stain while it is wet,
it will spread. Simply try and absorb excess moisture with a dry
cloth or paper towel. |

Gum is easily removed
by first hardening the gum on the garment using ice; once it is
brittle it can be broken or chipped off. Wash the
garment thoroughly to remove any sugar residue. |

Mom’s remedy
for removing Candle Wax is to place the stained area between
pieces of brown paper bag or paper towels, and press with a warm
iron. The paper will absorb the wax, continue rotating until all
the wax is out of the fabric and in the paper. |

Shoe polish
on your garments is not the end of the world, there’s an easy
solution. For colored fabrics, use one part rubbing alcohol and
two parts water; for white fabrics, use straight rubbing alcohol.

Suede garments and ballpoint pens: Do Not Attempt
to remove ink with hair spray. It only makes an additional stain
over the ink. |

White
vinegar is a safe substance for removing stains from all
natural fibers. It acts as a mild form of bleach and works
well on shirt collars and perspiration stains when used in the
correct proportion with water. |
